Ncane said the investigation will now be handled by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

IPID spokesperson Phaladi Shuping confirmed that the incident has been reported to the directorate and is under investigation.

Shuping said the killed suspect was wanted for a 2025 case of attempted murder in Estcourt, a 2024 CIT heist in Mzimkhulu and a 2025 heist in Winterton.

“It is alleged that [Hawks] members had received information about the suspect, which they then pursued. A shoot-out ensued between the police and the suspect at Hillcrest offramp near Shongweni horseracing and the suspect was fatally wounded,” said Shuping.

According to Meditech Emergency Response, the suspect was declared dead at the scene.
