Pinetown detective praised for securing two major rape convictions in eThekwini

Constable Nkululeko Mfeka has been honoured by the eThekwini SAPS district commissioner for securing two major rape convictions.

THE eThekwini  SAPS district commissioner, Major General Makhosazana Victoria Kheswa, has formally recognised the exceptional work of  Constable Nkululeko Mfeka from the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit based in Pinetown for securing two major rape convictions in September 2025.

Kheswa said the recognition highlights the dedication, perseverance, and the tireless efforts of detectives in protecting the community and delivering justice for victims.

According to the communications officer at the Pinetown SAPS Jennifer Naidu, the first conviction arose from an incident in Clermont, where a young woman was sexually assaulted by her ex-boyfriend.

“The pair had met at a farewell party and the accused accompanied the victim to a residence, where he committed the assault. Despite facing the challenge of having no supporting witnesses – the perpetrator’s friends refused to testify – the victim courageously stood alone in court,” said Naidu.

She added that Constable Mfeka’s diligent work ensured the perpetrator was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment, providing justice for the survivor.

Naidu said: “This case underscores community safety, especially as social gatherings increase during the festive season. The public is reminded to remain vigilant, monitor surroundings, and ensure trustworthy company at all times.”

The second case, said Naidu, involved the sexual assault of a young child by her uncle in Mpumalanga Township.

Naidu said the child had been sent by her grandmother to fetch stationery at the uncle’s residence, where the assault occurred.

She added that the investigation spanned from December 2023 to September 2025, involving social workers and psychological support to prepare the child for court testimony.

“Through unwavering commitment and compassionate handling, Constable Mfeka secured a conviction, with the perpetrator sentenced to 20 years imprisonment,” said Naidu.

Naidu stressed that this case highlights the critical importance of community vigilance, particularly for parents and guardians.

“Children should not be sent unaccompanied, and adults are urged to monitor interactions with both family and friends to ensure their safety,” said Naidu.

Mfeka urged the public to immediately report sexual offences, which he said is crucial “to ensure swift action, protect victims, and bring perpetrators to justice”.

In recognition of Constable Mfeka’s outstanding investigative work and dedication, Kheswa presented two certificates to the officer for the convictions.

“This acknowledgment celebrates not only the detective’s perseverance and teamwork but also SAPS’ commitment to protecting the public, ensuring justice for victims, and maintaining safety throughout the district,” said Kheswa.

The district commissioner added that these convictions are “a clear warning” to sex offenders that these crimes are “taken very seriously” by the police.

“The sentences demonstrate that it is not one or two years, offenders can spend a large portion of their life in prison.”
