Festive season boost for Paw Prints from Hillcrest High School

Hillcrest High School supports PAW Prints Rescue with a generous donation and hands-on puppy cuddles to help care for nearly 140 dogs.

PAW Prints Rescue and Rehoming recently received a much-needed donation from Hillcrest High School to assist with the upkeep of the centre and care of the dogs in their care.

Founder of Paw Prints, Jade Ashford, recently visited the school during the post-exam period to talk to learners about the challenges and joys faced in the animal rescue world.

Michaela Roberts spent the morning playing ball with and chasing the teenage dogs that Paw Prints brought to the school on their second visit. The dogs enjoyed having the freedom of the school field and the loving attention of the learners and staff at their beck and woof.

“We were very grateful to Jade from Paw Prints for the time spent with us,” said Denise Knight, Hillcrest High School principal. “Not only did she share valuable information about how the organisation runs, where it gets funding from, how adoptions are processed, she also brought along four puppies for staff and learners to cuddle while she did so!”

Jerzino Murray and Avela Hadebe pet a worn-out but very happy pup who had spent the morning charging around the field, chasing balls and playing.

In addition to bags of dog food, cleaning products and other items donated by learners and staff members, the school also donated over R2800 to Paw Prints. These funds, largely raised from the proceeds of the Visual Art and Drama Evening, were donated to help Paw Prints get through the costly festive season period taking care of the close on 140 dogs they currently have in their care.

“As a school Hillcrest High School is blessed to have many staff members, learners and parents who are passionate about supporting community causes,” said Knight. “Together we make a difference in and around the Hillcrest community.”

Educators Elton Moore and Shreshtha Ramsout were happy to volunteer to help with puppy cuddles.

The puppy cuddles were so well received that Paw Prints was invited to come back to the school the following week and bring with them some older “teenage” dogs to spend time with the learners and staff who ran around with them, playing fetch and giving out lots of cuddles on the school’s main field.

Luyanda Hlophe, Thingo Dlamini and Nkazimulo Ngcobo enjoyed hearing about Paw Prints and playing with the puppies brought for the learners to spend time with.

Paw Prints Rescue and Rehoming is based in Botha’s Hill and encourages volunteering from local high school learners, as well as members of the community. Volunteers can get involved with dog walking and learners who need to do community service can serve their hours at Paw Prints. The centre also runs a holiday fun programme for children to engage with the pups, do crafts and activities, and spend the morning having fun outdoors.
