Glide into joy: A day when the world comes alive on ice
The Galleria Ice Rink is open for public skating sessions, offering a space where families can make memories.
THERE is something magical about the moment your skates touch the ice. The cool air, the gentle scrape of blades, the laughter that follows a wobble or a triumphant glide — it’s a feeling that words barely capture.
That magic was alive and well on Sunday, December 14, when World Ice Skating Day was celebrated at the Galleria Ice Rink in Amanzimtoti, as part of a global celebration happening simultaneously around the world.
Organised by the International Skating Union (ISU), World Ice Skating Day is celebrated every December with one simple purpose: to celebrate the pure joy of ice skating.
This is not a day about medals, rankings, or competition. It is a day about fun. A day where figure skaters and members of the public step onto the ice side by side, united by smiles, courage, and the freedom of movement. No matter your age, background, or skating experience, this day reminds us that the ice belongs to everyone.
At the Galleria Ice Rink, the celebration began with heartfelt exhibition performances by 24 figure skaters, each bringing their own personality and passion onto the ice.
Their routines were not about perfection, but about expression — showing how skating can be graceful, powerful, playful, and emotional all at once.
For many watching from the sidelines, these performances sparked a simple thought: I want to try that.
And then, the magic truly unfolded. After the exhibitions, the ice was opened to everyone. Spectators, parents, siblings, friends, and first-time skaters were invited to step onto the rink and join in. Games like statue, musical chairs, and relay races filled the ice with laughter and cheers.

People who had never skated before found themselves gliding hand-in-hand with those more confident, proving that joy grows when it is shared.
Ice skating has a special way of lifting the spirit. It strengthens the body, sharpens balance, and builds confidence — but more than that, it makes people feel alive. It teaches us to fall and get back up, to trust ourselves, and to celebrate small victories.
World Ice Skating Day captured all of this in a warm, welcoming atmosphere where the only goal was to enjoy the moment.
As the day came to an end, one message stayed with everyone who attended: this doesn’t have to be just one day a year.
The Galleria Ice Rink is open for public skating sessions, offering a space where families can make memories, friends can try something new, and individuals can discover a passion they never knew they had.
For those who feel inspired to take it further, joining a figure skating club opens the door to learning, growth, and belonging in a supportive skating community.
So, lace up your skates, take that first step onto the ice, and let yourself feel the joy.
Whether you glide, wobble, or laugh your way around the rink, you’ll discover what so many already know — ice skating isn’t just a sport. It’s an experience worth coming back to.
