UPDATE: Vehicles linked to New Germany cash-in-transit heist recovered

Police are investigating a cash in transit robbery which occurred in New Germany last night and left a few people injured.

NO arrests have been made following a cash-in-transit robbery which occurred on Thursday, December 8 along Shepstone Road (Qashana Khuzwayo Road) New Germany.

The armed robbery left a civilian critically injured after sustaining two gunshots wounds on his abdomen.

Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Jennifer Naidu said preliminary information indicates that a cash-in-transit vehicle was intercepted by suspects travelling in multiple vehicles.

“The suspects, who were armed, fired shots at the vehicle, forced the security personnel out and used explosives to gain access to the rear of the vehicle. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken.”

According to Naidu, several shots were fired in the area during the incident.

“An off-duty police member travelling through the scene and a marked police vehicle passing nearby came under attack. One police member sustained injuries and was taken to a medical facility for treatment.

“Two security officers were injured; one sustained a leg injury while the other was treated for shock.”

She added that police members responded swiftly and engaged the suspects, who fled the scene.

“Vehicles believed to be linked to the incident were later recovered. Investigations are ongoing,” reported Naidu.
