Something’s not ‘write’

Letter to the Editor - week ending 16 January 2015.

EDITOR – Like many others in the upper Highway area, I really appreciate the Highway Mail, although some of the reporting leaves me scratching my head, and wondering if anyone edits articles before publication?

A case in point is the story concerning the admirable actions of Ensure’s security guards, who recovered R60 000, on page 10 of the week ending 9 January.

Well done, guys! What puzzles me is that we are informed that the woman concerned was, “followed after manually banking money”. Then we read that, “as she neared the centre the mugger swooped in, snatched the bag of cash and fled”.

Did the lady intend to deposit the money and it was taken from her on the way to the bank, or did she withdraw the cash which was subsequently stolen and, thankfully, recovered?

If she had already banked the cash, its subsequent theft (as reported) would be impossible. My question, dear Editor, is simply whether anyone checks for really obvious errors like this before publication?
