Johan fights his way to glory
Johan Duckworth need to raise R27 000 to compete in the Olympic qualifier, Africa Judo Open in Mauritius in November.
NEW Germany resident, Johan Duckworth, is a force to be reckoned with. Known as the strongest Judo competitor in his division nationally, Johan started competing in Judo when he was six years old.
He progressed in the sport to compete both nationally and internationally and has fought in tournaments in Tunisia, Belgium, Germany, Algeria, the US and many other countries.
His passion for the sport led him to establish and coach Gladiator Fight Academy (GFO) in New Germany four years ago.
While still competing for the national team in 2000, Johan injured his knee during combat and has to endured nine knee operations since.
“I’ve been to seven different surgeons who all informed me that what I’m doing is impossible and that I could never participate in any sport as such, unless I have a knee replacement. I never had the operation and pushed myself to continue combat fighting,” said Johan.
By not having the knee replacement, Johan is causing more damage to his knee.
“The only reason I keep going is my passion for the sport. On 17 March, my dad Bernard Duckworth died, and since I have dedicated my fighting skills to him,” said Johan.
Johan has won the national championships for the last two years and has also won the senior nationals under 100kgs and masters under 100kgs this year.
He’s qualified for the Africa Judo Open in Mauritius on 9 and 10 November, which is also an Olympic qualifier. The only obstacle that stands in Johan’s way to achieving his dream is a lack of sponsorship.
Judo SA doesn’t receive any funding and therefore competitors have to raise their own funds. Johan needs a cash sponsorship for his tour which costs R25 000 and a supplement sponsorship which is an additional R2000.
“I’m determined and optimistic that I will qualify for the Olympics – its been my lifelong dream,” said Johan.
Living to his motto, “never give up” and “nothing is impossible,”, Johan is relying on on this appeal, to help him raise funds for his tour.
