Local lass vaults to second place
Sarnia primary School pupil, Kyla Buys, nabbed second place nationally in her age group at the SA Gymnastics Games.
ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD Kyla Buys vaulted her way to second place in her age group in the South African Gymnastics Games in Pretoria recently.
She started gymnastics in 2011 and was placed in the level four category of gymnasts as, according to her coach Louise Bamber, she was a natural. Kyla broke her arm and gave up gymnastics for a year before joining the sport again in 2012.
She practices four times a week, 3.5 hours three times a week and the last session lasts two hours, at the Pinetown Gymnastics Club.
Kyla took part in vaulting, for which she won a gold medal. She won silver medals for beam and floor and came fifth in the bar category.
Her coach said she was extremely happy with Kyla’s performance at the Games. “I am very proud of her and that all of her hard work and dedication has been rewarded,” said Louise.
According to Kyla, her love of gymnastics is infinite and she really enjoys taking part in the sport. “I was very excited and surprised to win a gold medal and I certainly didn’t expect to be placed second overall in the U10 category. The first thing that I thought of when my name was called out was how proud my mom and dad and coach would be of my achievement,” said Kyla.
