THE well-known ‘Sugarman’ is returning to South Africa. According to the announcement by Big Concerts, the beloved singer will be performing in Johannesburg, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town in January and February next year.
Rodriguez`s South African fame is overwhelming and he is a household name to the youth of the 1960s. However, this was only discovered in the recent 2012 Oscar award-winning documentary, Searching For Sugarman. Showing that while Rodriguez was hopelessly performing in bars and clubs in Detroit, South Africans were proclaiming him as a legendary folk-rock superstar, singing along to Sugarman.
Rodriguez`s rare story of fame makes him that much more interesting. His only two albums, Cold Fact and Coming from Reality, went completely unnoticed in the USA, yet his revival concert was sold out in minutes to over 40 000 thousand fans who were led to believe that he was actually dead.
Therefore, the opportunity to see the confirmed living legend of Rodriguez should not be missed. Ticket sales open on 8 July at 9am through Computicket and on www.bigconcerts.co.za, with all the show times and details.
