Young performers set to take centre stage at Playhouse

The annual KZN Young Performers' Concert will take place at The Playhouse Drama Theatre on Saturday, 21 May at 7pm.

THE KZN Philharmonic Orchestra and the South African Society of Music Teachers presents the KZN Young Performers’ Concert at The Playhouse Drama Theatre on Saturday, 21 May at 7pm.

This special once-off concert will showcase the solo skills of some of the most promising young KZN orchestral performers and vocalists in a variety concert-type format, performing an eclectic repertoire of classical highlights, opera arias, choruses and even crossover opera/pop.

The KZN Philharmonic Orchestra will perform under the baton of Naum Rousine.

After a rigorous auditions process, the following soloists have been selected to perform: Two violin solos – Emma Steenkamp (8), performing Vivaldi’s Concerto in A Minor; and Sabastian Marimuthu (11), performing Seitz’s Concerto One in A Major. There will be two cello solos – Ayanda Makulwane and William Nobelo (both 24), performing Vivaldi’s Concerto Two. On piano will be Xizhi Aiden Luo (4), performing Noona’s Concertino in C Major; Weien Amy Luo (8), performing Sheutsova’s Concerto Variations Opera Three; Alessia Zedde (12), performing Haydn’s Concerto in C Major; and Joseph Carmody (10), performing Haydn’s Concerto in C Major. Alida Esterhuizen (12) will be showing off her recorder skills with Sammartini’s Concerto in F Major. These will not be the full works but only selected movements.

Budding vocalists will also take to the stage – Marianthe Panas (15), Sabrina Loubser (16), Nathan Julius (17), Ellen Pretorius (17), Marianthe Panas (and vocalists from Crawford School) and Nzuzo Masuku (21). EKwazini High School in uMlazi boasts four entrants in this year’s concert: Nolwazi Gumede (14) and the quartet – Nosipho Kortjaas (20), Thulasizwe Kweshube (19), Nomathemba Mthethwa (18) and Nolwazi Gumede.

The KZN Philharmonic Orchestra presents its World Symphony Winter Season weekly from 19 May until 23 June every Thursday evening in the Durban City Hall. Tickets are on sale through Computicket.
