LOCAL trumpet player, Lungani Gumede, and his band will perform at Seaman’s Corner in Hammarsdale on Saturday, 9 July.
Lungani Gumede is a trumpet player, vocalist, composer and arranger. His music is a reflection of his musical history.
It entails the sentiments of afro-jazz, emotions of West Africa and the honesty of Maskandi. He grew up in the township of Mpumalanga, Hammarsdale and still lives there.
He studies under the guidance of a classical trumpet player at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. After his studies he explored the arts around Durban by playing in various bands. Gumede then joined the IlLIMA band, in which he spent four years.
He has shared stages with Themba Mkhize, Gloria Bosman and Sipho Gumede.
As an experienced musician, he has exhibited his own repertoire in and around the city of Durban and in 2009 he was chosen to perform at the Hazelmere Jazz Festival.
He has spent time in Johannesburg where he was mentored by great musicians such as Themba Mkhize, Herbie Tsoaeli and others.
Gumede said, “People should look forward to something different and original. I will perform songs that I composed myself and that are inspired by life stories anyone can relate to.”
Gumede’s band will be: Lungani Gumede – vocals and trumpet, Sanele Phakathi – keyboard, Sbu Zondi – drums and Ildo Nandja – bass.
