Lungani Gumede blows his trumpet at Seaman's Corner in Hammarsdale.
TRUMPET player, vocalist, composer and arranger, Lungani Gumede and band will perform at Seaman’s Corner, Unit 3, Hammarsdale on Saturday 9 July
at 6.30pm.
His music is a reflection of his musical history. It entails the sentiments of Afro jazz, emotions of West Africa and the honesty of Maskandi. He grew up in the township of Mpumalanga, Hammarsdale and currently still lives there. He studied under the guidance of a classical trumpet player at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. After his studies he explored the arts around Durban by playing in various bands. Gumede then joined the Illima band in which he spent four years. He shared stages with the likes of Themba Mkhize, Gloria Bosman and Sipho Gumede.
As an experienced musician, he has exhibited his own repertoire in and around the city of Durban and in 2009 he was chosen to perform at the Hazelmere Jazz Festival. Also during the World Cup he performed on all big stages. He has spent time in Johannesburg where he was mentored by great musicians, such as Themba Mkhize, Herbie Tsoaeli and others.
Gumede said people should look forward to something different and original. “I will perform songs that I composed myself and that are inspired by life stories anyone can relate to,” said Gumede.
Gumede’s band consists of Sanele Phakathi on keys, Sbu Zondi on drums, Ildo Nandja on bass and him on vocals and trumpet.
Tickets are R30 each and available at the door.
