Fabulous reads – Children’s novel contains no bite

Book review - Krok en Dil, Jaco Jacobs and Nadia Du Plessis.

WITH a pairing stranger than peanut butter on hamburgers, Krok en Dil, an Afrikaans novel for children, follows the adventures of a humanoid crocodile and a living, breathing, talking gherkin.

While I understand this combination may tickle the fancy of littlies across South Africa, its the stories that involve the duo that leave much to be desired.

ALSO READ: Fabulous reads – Children’s novel bursts with adventure

This book contains three short stories, Krok die kok, Vandag gaan ek nie lag nie and Krok in ‘n rok. They are neither deep, funny, charming or seem to carry any meaning whatsoever, which feels like a waste for the fantastic art style found throughout the 64 pages.

If your child is already a fan of the protagonists, or of the author, then this is a great addition to your bookshelves. While Afrikaans books available for children may not be broad, you will be sure to find something a lot more worth your while and your buck in the Disney section.
