Hoedspruit: Here’s to a year of growth

In 2025, Hoedspruit saw major tourism, business, sport, and cultural highlights, strengthening its standing as a vibrant Limpopo hub.

HOEDSPRUIT – Hoedspruit marked 2025 with a year full of milestones, community achievements, sporting triumphs, and unique cultural moments.

From historic flights and economic developments to sporting victories and Hollywood fame, the town continues to grow as a vibrant hub in Limpopo.

Historic air link boosts tourism

On October 2, Limpopo celebrated a landmark moment as the first-ever FlySafair flight from Cape Town landed at Eastgate Airport. Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba hailed the route as a strategic boost for tourism, agriculture, and mining.

Operating three times weekly, the flight strengthens Hoedspruit’s role as a gateway to the Kruger to Canyon Biosphere, supporting conservation and local communities.

Mayor Tsheko Musolwa called for Eastgate Airport to gain international status, potentially connecting Hoedspruit to regional destinations like Vilanculos, Victoria Falls, and Botswana.

“Our economy relies entirely on tourism,” he said, adding that demand for flights will grow as Hoedspruit continues to expand.

The Oaks Crossing Shopping Centre opens

On Heritage Day, September 24, Maruleng celebrated the opening of The Oaks Crossing Shopping Centre, a 10 000m² development anchored by Shoprite and 29 other national tenants.

Developer Bafedile Mafologele reflected on turning a childhood dream into reality, creating jobs and economic opportunities.

The project provided 500 construction jobs and is expected to sustain 300 permanent positions, highlighting the power of partnerships between government, private investors, and communities.

Drakie Hands of Hope: Community impact

What began as an initiative by nine parents at Drakensig Primary School has grown into Drakie Hands of Hope, supporting vulnerable children with therapy, education, and guidance.

Founder Jenique Bornman emphasised early intervention, showing how local collaboration can transform young lives.

A charity concert on October 25 aimed to raise funds for continued support.

Ambrosia Blueberry Dash MTB Challenge

On November 2, cyclists tackled 12km, 30km, and 60km courses. Winners included Sian Swartz (12km), Barend Harris (30km), and Andreas Kuhn (60km), while Lu-Me Exall and Megan Pile topped the women’s categories.

Hoedspruit Wildlife Haven Half Marathon

The inaugural May 31 marathon featured runners from over 30 clubs.

Tebogo Pulusa and Rosaline Isaiah claimed the 21km titles, while Musa Thuketana and Sina Morongwa Malatji won the 10km races.

KAP Sani2c Women’s Race and Equestrian success

Hoedspruit’s Samantha Sanders and Sarah Hill won the women’s MTB race, while young showjumpers Tyla Coetzee, Enola De Biasi, Khali de Wet, and Rebecca Prioleau represented Limpopo at the national youth championships.

Hoedspruit on the big screen

Mission: Impossible 8, partially filmed in Hoedspruit, brought global attention to the region.

With Tom Cruise visiting in February, the film’s Cannes premiere in May is expected to boost tourism and showcase Hoedspruit’s stunning landscapes.

New Recreation: Hurling Hatchets opens

Hurling Hatchets, an axe-throwing venue at Bosveld Village Centre, offers a safe, thrilling experience for locals and visitors, highlighting Hoedspruit’s growing leisure scene.

Community safety

At the August 16 Wagterfees, Buco Hoedspruit raised R380 000 for Hoedspruit Farmwatch, supporting the volunteer group’s work to enhance safety across the town.

The fundraiser reflected Hoedspruit’s strong sense of community and civic pride.
