Modjadjiskloof hockey star in Netherlands
Harrismith High's hockey star Buhle Ncube will represent South Africa on the MS Invitational Hockey Team’s tour to the Netherlands this October.
TZANEEN – Buhle Ncube, a Gr 10 learner at Harrismith High School and a rising hockey star from Modjadjiskloof, has been selected to represent South Africa in the MS Invitational Hockey Team’s international tour to the Netherlands this October.
Her journey began in Gr 3 at Duiwelskloof Primary School when she first picked up a hockey stick, borrowed from her coach because she did not own one.
“I was only eight and had no idea how to play. They put me in the B team, probably because they didn’t know what else to do with me. But I was determined to make the first team,” she recalled.
Years of consistent practice, regional trials, and dedication helped Ncube develop into a top player.
“At first, I just wanted to show I could play. But over time, hockey became something I loved. It gave me confidence both on and off the field.”

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Ncube’s commitment never wavered. “Even when there were no games, I showed up to every practice. My coach once asked why, and I told him, ‘The resources are here, why waste the chance to improve?’”
In one memorable match, she pushed through bruises to challenge an unbeaten team. “I dove for every ball. What matters is keeping composure and staying focused.”
Off-season, Ncube stays fit by hiking and working out with her mother. “When things get intense, I breathe and focus,” she concluded.
