Good catches and great prizes for anglers

The Northern Small Craft League (NSCL) kicked off the 2024 season with anglers reeling in 138 bass on Saturday at the Klaserie Dam outside Hoedspruit.

The league is for anglers who enjoy fishing from a small boat or kayak and one of the highlights for anglers at their first competition of the year is the great turnout that the event had with 30 anglers taking to the water on Saturday. “We all enjoyed the competition at the dam and despite tough conditions, most anglers managed to catch a bag of five fish,” says Derick de Bruyn, the league organiser.

Flippie Smith caught the five longest fish on the day, measuring a total of 184cm. He wins the first competition and R2 700 prize money. Marnus Steyn is in second place with a bag of five fish measuring 182.5cm, he wins R1 620. Logan van Zyl took third place overall with a bag of five fish measuring 178.5cm, winning R1 080. The biggest fish of the day was caught by Lourens Matthysen, he reeled in a 50cm bass to win a Midas socket set. Darius Grobler reeled in the second biggest fish, measuring 48.5cm and Marnus Steyn caught a 48cm fish.

Righard Fuls took first place among the juniors with a bag of five fish measuring 146cm in total. De Bruyn invites all interested anglers, men or women and especially young anglers to join them for competitions. The next competition will take place at Ebenezer Dam near Haenertsburg on March 2. “All you need is a boat, kickboat, or kayak smaller than 4.2m and you are set to go. Only electronic trolling motors under 70 pounds or oars are allowed,” he adds.

The winners of each competition are calculated according to the length of their five longest fish.
