Doughnut Burger, Chicken Skins? KFC turns 50 with new menu

KFC has a new pop-up store to mark their half-century and fans can now buy its famous dunk sauces and merchandise.

It may be unbelievable that KFC has been with us for 50 years. For some it may feel longer but the mega fast-food franchise celebrated its half-century in style with a new menu and much more.

A family treat in SA households, KFC honoured its fans at a new pop-store in Rosebank, Johannesburg. It is a moment for fans to buy its merchandise and enjoy its limited birthday menu.

Named Kentucky Town, it will host patrons for 11 days from, 25 November until 5 December 2021, at The Zone Mall in Rosebank.

During an event hosted by Anele Mdoda, guests got to see the exclusive preview of the limited merchandise by local designers and taste the new treats.

One of the announcements was KFC having their sauces on the market, such as their competitors Nando’s, Spur and Chicken Licken.

KFC ‘s famous dunked sauces are now up for sale. and the store will also be selling its famous original sauces -Zinger and Dunked.

KFC’s limited menu and that Doughnut Burger

The franchise should maybe think of keeping its birthday menu because it’s quite tasty. New options such as Spicy Tabasco chips, Dunked Pops, wings or Zinger Chicken ,in flavours of either original dunked, honey gold and ghost pepper sauce, do bring the heat.

There is also the much-talked about Crispy Chicken Skins and the Doughnut Zinger Burger, which have the potential to develop a foodie following.

If you love spicy foods, this range is catered for you. The Tabasco chips, and dunked pops are tasty but the Doughnut Zinger Burger is served only on Saturdays and for obvious reasons, took much of the headlines.

It is a doughnut chicken sandwich basically.

The idea is the sweetness from the doughnut should complement and tone down the heat from the patty. It’s not overly sweet because of the zinger heat and is something you should try if you are not watching your calories.

KFC has achieved a fun and tasty range and continuing to turn up the heat, the pop-up store will challenge visitors on Friday and weekends to a Hot as Fire Wings Challenge to win prizes.

The limited menu items are all under R50.

KFC Merch

The store has been cleverly crafted to order and buy the merchandise. The range includes a limited-edition Birthday Collection of KFC classics tees, shorts, bucket hats, hoodies, socks and tech gadgets.

The collaborations are with artists and designers such as  David “Slaying Goliath” Tshabalala, Thesis Lifestyle and illustrator Yay Abe.

The ranges also includes winners from KFC Streetwise Culture Crew design challenge – Mzwanele Fani, Morena Moletsane and the CancelWear duo Karabo Phakathi and Senzo Nkabinde.

These types of collaborations can easily become caricatures and unwearable daily but this line has managed to be wearable. It is not for everyone but they do make fashion statements.
