TikTok has managed to provide young and old creatives a platform to showcase their talents and creativity throughout the tough pandemic period, and many global cultural and food trends began on the social media platform.

TikTok has unveiled “Year On TikTok 2021” in celebration of 2021-of-a-kind, which has been made possible by entertainment driven by its community

This year-end celebration recognises talent and looks back on creativity, trends, creators, movements, and moments that made 2021 one to remember in Mzansi.

“There is something really special about the global community on TikTok that people just can’t find anywhere else. For us, 2021 was a year for connection and we’ve seen people on TikTok laughing together, entertaining us, starting cultural phenomenons, and teaching us new things.

“It has been incredible to see the depths of entertainment and creativity from this community, and we’re delighted to celebrate all the ways we have come together this year on TikTok,” said the chief operating officer of TikTok, Vanessa Pappas.

Below are some major South African TikTok food trends of the year 2021.

Oreo in a cup

Creating baked goods in a mug or a cup has become a popular trend all over social media all over the world. The realisation that cakes can be made in the microwave has sparked creativity and has influenced many people to create their own delicious versions of cakes in a mug.

Sitting on 42.1K followers and 818.1K likes, Whisks and Ladles shared her version of a mug cake which she created using a couple of Oreos and a few other ingredients.

She starts the mug cake tutorial by adding four Oreos to her cup. She then adds milk and mixes the milk and Oreos while crushing them to ensure that the two ingredients are mixed well.

She then adds one tablespoon of sugar, one tablespoon of flour, one and a half teaspoon of baking powder, and one teaspoon of cocoa powder, and then stirs everything well.

She then adds a whole Oreo into the mixture, ensuring that it is completely covered by the mixture.

She then bakes the mug cake for one minute in the microwave, and enjoys the end result with a scoop of her favourite ice cream.

They are never going to know

Cakes are the perfect treats to buy and bake when you have something important to celebrate by yourself or with your loved ones.

Ordering cakes from a professional baker, whoever, can be extremely costly, but it may be your only option if you do not know how to bake or lack some creativity in the baking and cooking department.

The brilliant hack and tutorial shared by Zaynab Paruk is a cheat code to creating your own desired cake by skipping a few steps in the earlier stages of the baking process.

In the video, she begins by showing her viewers and followers that she has bought two cakes, and a few sweets and treats which she will be using to further decorate her cake.

She starts off by placing the one cake over the other, to create one whole cake with four layers.

She then uses a knife to scoop off the icing that is on the cake, and then adds it to the icing she has made separately for the cake.

Once she is done making the icing, she then covers the cake with it, and then decorates the cake with the sweets and treats which she bought at the store.

Chicken liver pasta

Pasta dishes and recipes have also gone viral over social media throughout the year, and there are currently thousands of quick and easy pasta trends which are available for people to try on TikTok.

Siya has shared her pasta recipe on her TikTok page, Meals by Siya, which has taken South Africa by storm and has reached over 106K likes.

She starts off by spicing her chicken liver with a variety of spices, before tossing some ginger and onion into a pan to fry.

She proceeds by adding spices to the onion and ginger, and then tosses her spiced liver into the pan to fry with the onion and ginger.

While her liver is frying, she then boils some pasta in a different pot, and then returns to the liver to add some chutney as well as barbeque sauce.

She then adds a bottle of cream to her livers, and finishes the dish off with some black pepper and herbs before tossing in her cooked pasta and mixing everything together.
