Lock, stock and wine barrel: National Beer Day

By Adriaan Roets

The second South African National Beer Day is coming your way – and a day of this magnitude won’t be complete without full-on celebrations.

Beer has walked a long way in South Africa, from the craft beer boom to fully-established beer houses, the popularity of beer pairings or simply the growth of beer as a drink that’s more than just malt and barley.

The inaugural #SANBeerDay in 2017 saw more than 50 events in seven provinces throughout the country.

The South African Breweries has compiled a list of beer festivals around the country in 2018.

Free brewery tours at Newlands Brewery in Cape Town

On February 3, take part in the fascinating tour. Pre-booking is essential. Arrive at least 20 minutes early in order to sign in, no U-18s, no alcohol to be consumed prior to the tour, closed flat shoes to be worn. The tour ends in a bar setting where you can finally appreciate a cold one.

Discounted beer tours at the SAB World of Beer in Newtown

On February 3, Joburg’s popular tour is offering reduced ticket prices. African beer making is also explored. They run every hour, on the hour and the last tour is at 5pm. Bookings are essential.

Beer Day with Beerhouse

Whether you’re in Centurion, Fourways or Long Street on February 3, Beerhouse will turn into an oasis by offering 50% off their #DrinkLocal tasting tray and a free beer tasting with local brewers at scheduled time slots. The #DrinkLocal tasting tray is made up of (6 x 120ml) beers from breweries that are within 20km of Beerhouse. Think of it as farm to table for beer.
