This is the largest jackpot this year and one of the top three highest jackpots in South African lottery history.
Two people have become instant multimillionaires after winning the Powerball and Powerball Plus draws on Tuesday night in the biggest jackpot of 2025.
Millions through banking apps
The headline win of the night came from the PowerBall jackpot of R163 552 190.60. This is the biggest jackpot of the year so far. It was won by a Nedbank participant who spent R30 on their ticket and manually selected their winning numbers.
The second winner from the PowerBall Plus draw won R31 018 628.30. This player struck fortune through the FNB app. The QuickPick selection was used with a R150 wager.
Ithuba expressed that this highly anticipated double-jackpot draw attracted a surge of entries across the country. It saw thousands participating via multiple play channels, including retailers, online, and mobile
platforms.
Notably, over 60% of participants played via banking apps, reaffirming South
Africa’s growing shift toward convenient, digital play experiences.
Ithuba celebrates a huge win
“South Africa woke up to not one, but two new multi-millionaires,” said Charmaine Mabuza,
CEO of Ithuba.
“The PowerBall jackpot of R163 million is truly life-changing, and the PowerBall Plus winner will also enjoy a remarkable new beginning. We extend our warmest congratulations to both winners.
“The banks would have notified them by now, and we look forward to welcoming them for their winning’s facilitation process. We urge all players to check their tickets, as there are many more winners across multiple divisions.”
Biggest jackpot
Ithuba record books show that South Africa’s largest jackpot to date was R232 million, won in 2019 and was the biggest lottery win ever claimed on the African continent.
What happens after winning?
All banking app winners receive an SMS from their bank containing a reference number and further instructions on the documents to bring when visiting the lottery operator, Ithuba.
If a player wins less than R250 000, the money will be deposited directly into their account if they used a banking app to play.
Players who win more than R250 000 will be referred to Ithuba for a payout.
Free financial and trauma counselling is offered to those who win more than R50 000. Winnings are tax-free.
