Photography tell many thousands of words

Bosua started the meeting by presenting a manipulated image. "The members had to guess what it was, but were unable to.

The local photography club held its monthly meeting last Wednesday at Bosua & Cornelissen. The club of five years comprises a group of local photographers who meet once a month on every second Wednesday.

They share ideas, techniques, and comment on one another’s photos, while working on improving their abilities.

According to Herman Bosua, a member of the club, the theme for February’s meeting, Paint by light outside, was cancelled since it was raining on the day. “We will try to fit it into the next meeting. The practical evenings are very fruitful. There will be one every second month.”

Bosua started the meeting by presenting a manipulated image. “The members had to guess what it was, but were unable to. It was a portion of a ballpoint pen. The Photoshop procedure used was Neon.”

Every month participants submit photos which go through a judging panel. There are five categories: nature mono, nature colour, other mono, other colour, and set subject (the set subject changes each month).

The winning images were:

• Mono – Nature:

• Mono – Open: Photo 3

• Colour – Nature: Photo 4

• Colour – Open: Photo 5

Each member submits between one to 10 images per month. Judging was done by two experts from Gauteng.

“After the panel of experts are done, we discuss the results and comments. These discussions are such an eye-opener, as there is always something new to learn. There were 42 images to be judged. One of the judges is absolutely obsessed with having everything in thirds.”

The winning photos are submitted to compete in the Photographic Society of South Africa magazine.

The next meeting is on March 8 at 18:00 at the offices.
