High-ranking government officials and top brass from the SAPS have gathered in the Lowveld for the second statutory Police MinMEC meeting of the year.

The crucial one-and-a-half-day gathering, taking place at ANEW Resort in White River on Friday, July 24 and Saturday, July 25, is being chaired by acting Minister of Police Firoz Cachalia.

National reset agenda

Delegates, including MECs, heads of departments and SAPS officials across the country, are convening under the central theme: ‘Advancing a national reset agenda for policing’.

The primary objective of the gathering is to drive effective co-ordination within the police service and strengthen co-operation across national, provincial and local spheres of government on critical safety and security issues.

Delegates are focusing their discussions on establishing actionable implementation plans for nine key MinMEC priorities originally adopted during the March 6 sitting.

Key areas targeted

Key areas on the agenda include:
• curbing crime levels, with an intensive focus on tackling gender-based violence
• reducing firearm-related crimes across communities
• restoring and increasing public trust in the police service.
