SAPS honours their best

"The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra."

NELSPRUIT – “The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra.”

This quote by American football broadcaster James “Jimmy” Johnson is what Lt Gen Thulani Ntobela used to describe the annual Provincial Comminsioner’s Prestige Awards.

“The awards were launched three years ago to reward the little extra efforts displayed by some of our members. I had noticed that among us, there are members who showed commitment, dedication and passion. It was only fitting that I honour such members who live by the adage: Going beyond the call of duty.

“The only difference between their work and that of others is the extra effort they put into their work. We will continue to reward this good pratice,” said Ntobela.

He stated that the participants clearly showed that they understood the premier’s call to “work collectively and harder in creating a safer environment for our people”.

Ntobela further thanked local business tycoon Mr Robert Gumede for personifying Winston Churchill’s famous quote, “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give” in his sponsoring of the event.

In the category Vispol Commander of the Year, it was Col Hendrik Oosthuizen of Witbank SAPS who took the honours while local constable Hitler Ubisi was awarded the prestigious Vispol Employee of the Year commendation. The White River Flying Squad were commended for their extra efforts and walked away as runners-up in the Vispol Group of the Year. In the section dedicated to the detective units of the province, Nelspruit featured only once in Detective Commander of the Year where Col Gerrie Agenbag was nominated as runner-up.

None of the other categories including Catch of the Year, Station Commander of the Year and Senior Manager of the Year featured a Nelspruit candidate as a finalist.
