NELSPRUIT – Mr Thulani Sibuyi’s resignation as head of department (HOD) at safety and security has been welcomed by the DA.
Mr Anthony Benadie, leader of the party in Mpumalanga, said the party welcomed Sibuyi’s “sacking”. “We hope that this decision sets a precedent for similar incidents in the future and that Sibuyi doesn’t get redeployed to another senior government post, or the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature, which seems to be the trend for sacked HODs, he said.
Sibuyi was most recently arrested in Kempton Park on October 6 for allegedly driving under the influence and impersonating a police officer. In August, he also appeared on charges of alleged fraud and corruption in the Nelspruit Regional Court.
Mr Zibonele Mncwango, spokesman for the office of the premier, Mr David Mabuza, called the “solution” between the premier Sibuyi “amicable”, saying “both acknowledged and accepted that personal problems damagingly affected his work portfolio”.
According to Mabuza, the decision came after some discussions with the now former HOD. “We felt that he should recuse himself from his position since his responsibility of leadership has been compromised by his personal problems,” he said.
“In his first case we wanted to leave those matters to court; however, recent allegations have compelled us to give him time to reflect and clear himself. We received his resignation letter and we have accepted it,” Mabuza said. According to the premier, an acting HOD would be appointment soon.
