Government commemorates Mahatma Ghandi
It was organized to re-enact the historic Transvaal March of 1913.

Hundreds of people lined up on the N11 between Charlestown and Volksrust as part of the Mahatma Gandi Commemorative Walk.
Present at the march was MECs for culture, sport and recreation in Mpumalanga and KwaZulu Natal, Ms Sibongile Manana and Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha and High Commissioner of India, Mr Virenda Gupta, Mahatma Gandhi lookalikes and hundreds of people from Pietermaritzburg, Ladysmith and Dundee
It was organized to re-enact the historic Transvaal March of 1913, which was aimed exposing the unjust laws of the previous government. In 1913, Gandhi organized a protest march starting from Charlestown, KwaZulu Natal to Volksrust, Mpumalanga in which they entered the then Transvaal illegally as a defiance campaign. Gandhi was subsequently arrested after the march and imprisoned at Volksrust Prison. His cell at the prison has been turned into a museum.
