See the news highlights for January 2013
The new year heralded a time of mourning for the many friends and family of well-known local, Dan Peoples, who died tragically while on holiday in Mozambique. The month also started with a terrible toll in road accidents. Read about these and other news highlights for the month below.

• January 4: While the Holiday season is a time of celebration for family and friends, Lowvelder reported on horrific accidents during 2012, claiming the lives of many Lowvelders.
• Mr Dan Peoples of White River died tragically in December 2012, who was well known as an adventurer and traveller.
• January 8: Eksteen-Egpaar oorleef mikrovliegtuig-ongeluk, op ‘n vlug vanaf Hazyview.
• Guards block MTPA, because they have not been paid since October 2012.
• January 11: Gruesome lunch in Kruger National Park, including two hyenas feeding on partially decomposed carcasses of baby hippos.
• Mother from Pilgrim’s Rest, sad and angry after the horrific suffering of a stillbirth on the morning of December 25, at Matibidi Hospital.
• January 15: Pensionaris van Nelspruit, Me. Susan Prinsloo (74), laat ‘n rower op sy neus kyk, nadat sy hom met ‘n rewolwer aangehou het totdat die Polisie opgedaag het.
• Chimpanzee Nina, mother-to-be at Chimp Eden, defied all odds and is in perfect health to give birth in captivity after she was abused. See the video.
• January 18: Heavy rain and flooding predicted, and Lowvelders were warned against it, and to avoid crossing full rivers or flooded bridges. The magnitude of flooding in Mozambique leaves emergency care workers in shock.
• Mother leaves baby of five days old, in the mercy of the elements in Barberton. After the father took her into his care, police told him that he does not have any claim on this child, as he did not pay lobola.
• January 22: Flood caused havoc in the Lowveld. Flood-water torrent claims four lives, after rain bucketed down and dams literally burst their banks.
• ANC officially opened its provincial offices in Nelspruit.
• January 25: World Focuses on birth of Baby Chimpanzee. Abused, nine-year-old Nina gives birth to a male chimpanzee at Chimp Eden, against all odds. Mother and baby will be closely monitored.
• January 29: Driver, Mr Hathlane Sibiya, was arrested after three students were allegedly killed on purpose in car accident.
• Information leads to massive cocaine bust in Low’s Creek, and lead to arrest of major drug-trafficking syndicate.
