Enterprising students combine green initiative with fundraising

Second hand tuxedo’s and ball gowns to raise funds for CANSA

Kiran Coetzee and Robyn Forte, have come up with an innovative way of combining green initiative with fundraising. They intend to sell and auction second hand tuxedo’s and ball gowns to raise funds for CANSA.

The two grade 10 students at Uplands College noticed how many expensive evening garments were bought specially for matric farewells and debutante functions. After these events these beautiful clothes are then never worn again. Kiran and Robyn decided to launch a project where people are asked to donate their used tux’s and gowns to be auctioned in aid of the Uplands College CANSA Debs, part of the Lowveld CANSA Association Debutantes Project.

The auction known as ‘Cause for Applause’, will be held on Friday, February 28 where Laurette Batstone, former Miss SA, will be the MC at the event. Batstone has already donated one of her dresses for the cause. Xela Fashion Academy also donated a garment. There will also be outfits for sale on the evening.

Kiran and Robyn are appealing to readers to donate unwanted eveningwear for their fundraising event. Tickets cost R50 p/person and there are only 400 tickets available. The venue and starting time will be confirmed early February.

For further information and tickets contact Kiran at kchilli.kiran@gmail.com. During school hours he can be reached via sms on 079-883-1129. Contact can be made personally with Kiran after 18:00 on the same number.
