MALALANE – Two talented grade 12 learners of Imagine Scholar in Nkomazi are taking their community by storm.

Promise Mathabela and Zodwa Madonsela finished their matric year and are now joining the Imagine Scholar group by encouraging young people in their community to educate and express themselves through poetry.

These two exceptional girls will be starting their collegiate studies, coordinating poetry lessons and will be planning a first annual poetry slam for all Nkomazi youngsters.

According to the Imagine Scholar blog in learning to express themselves, the youth can realise the value of their true selves.

Madonsela says, “Even when I sleep I dream about it. It’s going to be big.
I want to create a community that understands poetry. You don’t have to write a good poem, but you have to write a real poem.”

Imagine Scholar is a highly selective four-year, after-school mentorship programme for talented, disadvantaged youth of the Nkomazi region.

They offer a student-centred programme that focuses on character development, enhancement of critical thinking skills, and overall English proficiency.

They work with the brightest students who are hindered by financial hardship and who, despite their humble backgrounds, have high aspirations and are possess endless drive.

Mathabela smiles, “I’m looking forward to working with everybody. I’m looking forward to changing someone else’s life, seeing someone growing in front of my eyes!”

Madonsela muses, “I’m looking forward to being in the environment just generally; I love Imagine Scholar! If it were up to me I wouldn’t leave this place. I am looking forward to teaching what I’ve learnt to someone else. That’s really exciting and fulfilling. I’m trying to grow, as a person, and help someone else realize their passion.”

The storytelling unit captured the students’ imaginations to freely express themselves.

Scholars focused on articulating the social issues they have encountered in their lives, demonstrating through the story different lessons about the issue, and become inspired to change their communities.
