No one takes responsibility for roads

MALALANE – Nkomazi Municipality roads are in a terrible condition, although they are not the municipality’s responsibility something has to be done about it and responsibility taken.

Within the municipality there are national, provincial and municipal roads, each of which have a department that is responsible for them.

Those in a town are the responsibility of the municipality, roads such as the N4 is a national one and is maintained by a private contractor.

The other roads in Nkomazi has to be maintained by the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport (DPWRT). The spokesman for the local municipality Mr Cyril Ripinga informed the publication that the department has its own offices within the municipality. “They have staff and managers who know exactly which roads are their responsibility. We as the municipality also ensure that all complaints regarding these roads are sent to them directly,” explained Ripinga.

Spokesman for the DPWRT, Mr David Nkambule was unavailable for comment at the time of going to print.
