The Autotec Foundation recently hosted a prize-giving ceremony to honour the learners and educators of Phatfwa Secondary School in KaBokweni. Land Rover Nelspruit also sponsored books for the school.
Learners and educators received certificates, book prizes, medals and trophies for outstanding performance in academics, sport and arts.
This school previously could only achieve a low 60 per cent pass rate for matriculants. Last year educators and learners made it their vision to achieve 80 per cent. Both learners and educators camped at the school over weekends to attend extra classes. This commitment resulted in 91 per cent of the grade 12 learners of 2013 obtaining their matric. Mbokane Sakhile and Nkosi Lillian were the two top academic achievers in the class of 2013.
“The school’s success came about as a result of the combined support of the Autotec Foundation and the Department of Education, says the principal, Mr Mabuza. The quarterly incentives that the Autotec Foundation has introduced in our school made a big difference as it boosted the confidence of our educators.”
