Two grade seven pupils of Summerhill Prep School were among the 105 aspiring candidates who recently received scholarships for grade eight at Uplands College Hall in 2015.
Jarrod van der Westhuizen wrote the exam at Southern Cross School in Hoedspruit and was awarded a 50 per cent scholarship, not only for his academics, but his all-round cultural abilities. He has taken a lead role in many school productions and is well known for his singing.
Amber Freestone was awarded not one, but two scholarships. The first is an Uplands College Award, granted to a candidate who is expected to make an excellent contribution in the academic, sporting and cultural spheres of the school. Amber competed against 105 other candidates from 27 schools. She was also invited for an interview for the Pott’s Scholarship. This new award, initiated by the Pott family of White River, is also for a student with outstanding potential.
Amber was placed on a shortlist of five and was finally awarded 25 per cent of the total award, along with three others.
Amber and Jarrod are “old-timers” at the school, having attended Summerhill since grade 00. They have collectively contributed to every aspect of the school’s life and have done it proud by their achievements. It believes the recognition is well deserved.
