Premier promises better assistance for local government

Mabuza promises the AG improvements on municipal performance following recent poor audit outcomes.

MBOMBELA – The new Auditor-General (AG) Mr Kimi Makwetu visited the province on Thursday.

The AG once again pointed out problems such as the lack of consequences for poor performance and transgressions, slow response by leadership to address the root causes of poor performance, the non-filling of key vacant positions and incompetent key officials.

Thaba Chweu, Bushbuckridge, Mkhondo, Msukaligwa and Emalahleni municipalities received disclaimers in the AG’s 2012/13 audit findings.

The premier, Mr David Mabuza said government lost its footing with municipalities due to campaigning during the recent elections.

“Going forward we are going to act against poor performance. It is either we act or get swallowed. We must take drastic action because there is an indication from the leadership of municipalities that there is lack of willingness,” he said.
