Disney comes to KaBokweni

The dictionary defines a philanthropist as someone who demonstrates concern for humanity - who donates time and money for charitable applications.

KABOKWENI – The dictionary defines a philanthropist as someone who demonstrates concern for humanity – who donates time and money for charitable applications.

Now I have only met Robert Gumede very briefly and know him personally only from, “Morning sir, my name is Matthys. I am from Lowvelder. Would you mind moving a little this way to enable me to get a picture?”

The rest of my impressions come from observing him and listening to what others shared with me.

Robert is a legend or perhaps, I should rather say, his humanity is legendary.

His childhood presented many challenges, most of which could easily be offered as excuses for not living his dream, and many people would apply the latter in the blame game.

He did and does not. Despite his phenomenal success in business, he sets an example in terms of supporting the community and in particular the kids, where he grew up.

On August 9 he turned 51 and as has become tradition over the past 13 years, Robert celebrated his birthday surrounded by thousands of children. KaBokweni Stadium became Disneyland for them.

It was all about fun, food and by sharing his approach to life – believe, work hard and you will achieve – he hopefully sowed the seeds in the minds of these children which will motivate them to become successful and then, in time, to also give back to their communities.

Many current students and some who have completed their studies, which have been sponsored by the Robert Gumede Family Keni Foundation, attended the celebrations and shared their own brand of magic to encourage the youngsters to rise above their circumstances, study and grab any and all opportunities which are presented.

On this day they also handed over two houses won in a raffle which was held in 2013, and encouraged all other corporate business to follow and lead by example.

There is this saying that “giving is the same as receiving, and you cannot receive if you have your hands full”.

Madiba understood and supported the fact that our children are the future – that charity begins at home and that, not unlike Robert, we must focus our intention and support locally within our communities if we are to achieve what often seems to be, the impossible.

Congratulations Robert – 51 years old – it has been suggested the second 50, is a lot easier and even more pleasurable.
Enjoy!
