MBOMBELA – The final phase of the widening of the R40 is estimated to cost R75 million. The construction from Geelhout Avenue to the Brinkspruit River Bridge recently commenced and it is planned to be completed by September next year.
It will see an additional lane being added to each carriage way. All the traffic lights will also be upgraded, as will the street lights up to the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). Public-transport stops will also be added and pedestrian walkways will be constructed for the length of the road on both sides.
According to Mr Joseph Ngala, spokesman for the municipality, Mbombela is funding the project through the public transport infrastructure and system grant allocated from National Treasury. He said the entire contract was worth approximately R75 million excluding consultants’ fees.
