Primary’s swimmers give their all in the pool

Swimmers from nine schools in the Lowveld – Malelane, Komatipoort, White River, Nelspruit Primary as well as Laerskool Bergland, Curro, Uplands College and Penryn College, visited Barberton last Thursday.

This was to take part in the annual swim gala hosted by Barberton Primary.

Although the weather was somewhat overcast, this didn’t deter the swimmers from braving the cold water and giving it their all. The gala took place at the Umjindi Municipal swimming pool which had recently been the subject of considerable debates when it came to light that the possibility existed that it might be sold and demolished in the near future.

Before the event started, Barberton Primary apologised for the fact that the medals and trophies had not yet arrived from Gauteng, but promised to have it sent to the winners once it had been delivered.

Although Barberton didn’t achieve to rake in any of the ludorum prizes, some swimmers performed exceptionally well.

Grant de Jager, who competed in the boys u/10 category, achieved three first places, a second and a third position. These were for the medley, free stroke, breaststroke, butterfly stroke and backstroke respectively.

Another swimmer of Barberton Primary, Tuanè Silver, who competed in the girls u/10, attained two second places for freestyle relay and breaststroke and two third places for medley and butterfly stroke.

The girls’ dash for cash was won by Curro’s Jeanne Joubert.

Curro also broke two records in the u/14 medley.
