Library cultivates a love of reading

To encourage pupils to read more, the Hazyview Library recently hosted a readathon competition for six schools in the area

The annual Readathon competition was divided into categories for grades one, three, five and seven. Each school was allowed to bring one participant for each category. The learners were then given a passage from a story to read and were scored by a panel of judges.

A few pupils also memorised and recited poems to entertain their peers. All the children received certificates, with the top three pupils per category and the top three schools each receiving trophies. The top three schools were Khombindlela, Tfolinhlanhla and Majika.

Readathon is held every year by libraries around the country as a way to cultivate a love of reading among schoolchildren.
