Record-breaking number of golfers take part in tourney

This past Thursday the senior golfers of Mpumalanga took to the Malalane Golf Course for their end-of-the-year tournament. These experienced players, who belong to the South African Golfing Embassadors Society (Sages), took part in the day with great excitement and eagerness.

They teed off at 08:00 after the 61 participants, a record-breaking number, posed for a group photo in front of the club- house. The points system was divided into teams of two, meaning that the individual ones were combined and then divided into two and submitted as a team point.

Competitions in the seniors section included closest to the pin, longest drive, and the prestigious Henk Joubert Floating Trophy for best participation throughout the year, which was awarded to Jean van Tonder for his outstanding determination on and off the course.

The longest drive from the tee was awarded to Gerrit de Jager and the tournament was won by our very own Turbo van Coller and his teammate Leon du Plessis with 71 points.

They were closely followed by Thys Greef and Jan van Tonder on 69 points. Willem Bekker and Dupe du Preez on

68 points were third and Eddie Frazer and Japie Jacobs on 67 points fourth.

Closest to the pin were Nico Swanepoel on the 11th green, Alister Mc Donald on the 17th green and Leon du Plessis on the 18th. Great prizes from local companies such as Pam Golding and Onderberg Verwerkingskoöperasie were up for grabs.

After the long day of golf the players returned to the club- house for a delicious lunch prepared by the in-house chef, Lucy Granville.
