Mbombela Local Municipality dismisses two in high positions

Both the former Municipal Manager and the Manager for Community Services were dismissed on December 19.

MBOMBELA – Mbombela Local Municipality confirmed that it’s former municipal manager’s (MM) dismissal was upheld on Friday. Its general manager for community services was also fired.

The municipal manager’s offices confirmed the letting go of Mr Rasheed Matola as its general manager for community services on Friday. The axing of former MM, Mr Xolani Mzobe was also upheld. This follows investigations into their alleged contravention of policy and legislation when procuring services for the Africa Cup of Nations 2013.

Lowvelder previously reported that disciplinary action were launched against Mzobe and Matola. This was done on recommendation from the former MEC for cooperative governance and traditional affairs, Mr Simon Skhosana.

Skhosana compiled a report on spending and procurement during the Afcon tournament which was co-hosted by Mbombela in January and February of  last year.

After the report was presented to the Mbombela municipal council, both men were placed on precautionary suspension.
According to an earlier press statement issued by Skoshana, preliminary findings pointed out certain irregularities with reference to the Municipal Finance Management Act and supply management regulations and policies of the municipality.

Mzobe reacted to his precautionary suspension by lodging a dispute of unfair dismissal with the South African Local Government Bargaining Council in April. On November 29 the decision to dismiss was upheld following an arbitration hearing. The presiding officer found Matola guilty as charged.
