Community leaders sponsor soccer tourney
The sponsors' main objective was to promote and encourage local players as they'd realised that there was an abundance of talent in the Maandagshoek area.
MAANDAGSHOEK – New Year’s Eve was celebrated with joy and entertainment as the local community participated in the annual soccer tournament that was launched by local doctors and businessmen in 2013.
The tournament was in its second year, after being won by Maandagshoek United Brothers in 2013. The prize was increased from R15 000 to a whopping R20 000 in cash. It was sponsored by Dr Benny Choeu, Dr Angie Tebele Sebopela, and Mr Lepudi Magabane.
The sponsors’ main objective was to promote and encourage local players as they’d realised that there was an abundance of talent in the Maandagshoek area. They cited that the players did not have the proper channels and information in order to be recognised by the higher levels of the soccer fraternity.
Among the guest invited to evaluate players, were Messrs Simon Mamphoke, Pieter Rooi, Mzodie Mokwena and Abram Manok.
The tournament lasted from December 26 to 31.
The fourth-placed team were Skiti FC, who went home with R2 000. Third were Balotsaneng FC, with R3 000.
Last year’s winners, Maandagshoek United brothers came second and went home with R6 000.
The winner of Maandagshoek’s annual soccer tournament for 2014 was Nigeria, taking home a cheque of R9 000 and a floating trophy.
Dr Benny Choeu thanked all the teams and promised to take the tournament to another level. “We will invite Premier Soccer League players and scouts to pick the best players. We will also increase the winner’s prize. I have two sponsors who will be adding financial muscle to this tournament,” he promised.
