It’s the start of a new school year and many students are faced with a challenge: they have to fold their own ties. This may be a good time for me to confess that I still don’t know how to fold a tie as I bought myself a tie gadget while I was attending school. It looked like a tie, but was far from it. An elastic school tie consists of a part of a tie that is fastened to an elastic – you just snap it over your neck and – voila!

I have since been confronted with the fact that they’re not considered as stylish and realised that I need to learn how to tie a tie. According to genius.com, it can be done in six easy steps.

1. Start by hanging the tie around your neck – the wide end of the tie on your right, extending a foot below the narrow end.

2. Cross the wide end over the narrow end and bring it up through the loop that has now formed.

3. Bring the wide end down, around behind the narrow end and up on your right.

4. Then put the wide end down through the loop and across the narrow end – see image.

5. Turn the wide end upwards and pass it through the loop again.

6. Complete by slipping the wide end through the knot which has now formed in the front. Tighten and draw up towards your shirt’s collar.
