SA’s best cyclists geared for glory
There will be four designated routes for the various categories, including a 10-kilometre time-trial race, a three-kilometre race, a paracycling race as well as a punishing road race.
The Pennypinchers SA National Road Championships will test the mettle of South Africa’s best cyclists as they take to the picturesque Lowveld roads from February 3 to 8.
There will be four designated routes for the various categories, including a 10-kilometre time-trial race, a three-kilometre race, a paracycling race as well as a punishing road race.
Motorists will need to take note that roads will be partially as well as totally closed depending on the type of race that is held that day.
On February 3 to 4, the paracycling and time-trial routes will be used. The cyclists will race from Mbombela Stadium up until the first traffic circle on the Matsafeni Road (P166) and back around the stadium to the finish in Madiba Drive.
On February 5 and 6, riders will carry on with the same route, meaning that the P166 will be completely closed from the circle where you enter Mbombela.
From February 7 to 8 the main road race will be held on a 12,36-kilometre route which will take riders from Mbombela Stadium up to the R37 just after the off-ramp from the N4. Therefore off-ramps will be closed during the final two days of the race from 05:00 to 16:00, according to Hendrik Wagenaar, vice-president of Cycling South Africa.
