MBOMBELA – Following the arrest of Mr Bheki Zulu, a member of the mayoral committee, last week on a charge of malicious damage to property, his name has also popped up on the list of councillors whose consumer accounts to Mbombela Local Municipality (MLM) were in arrears.
According to the financial statements for the year which ended on June 30, 2014, and were audited by the Auditor General (AG) and tabled to council on June 30, Zulu owed the municipality R21 409 at the end of the financial year. Of this, R19 811 had been outstanding for more than 90 days.
Of the 12 councillors whose accounts were in arrears, only three had made arrangements for payment or settled the amounts after the reported period, according to the AG.
These included speaker Ms Jesta Sidell who owed R4 990. The total for 2014 amounted to R153 389, down from the R160 155 total in arrears at the end of 2013.
