Penryn pupil races to success

This bright star is his father's pride and joy, justifying each practice session with gold medals.

After receiving a gold medal during last weekend’s Mpumalanga Championship Athletics, Gary Lubisi had been chosen to participate at the South African Championships in Germiston on the weekend of March 19.
Lubisi (12) of Penryn Preparatory School completed the 150 metre sprint in 19,15 seconds. A total of six of Penryn’s athletes went to the Mpumalanga Championships, but Gary is the only one of Penryn Preparatory School’s athletes to have achieved a first place and advance to the South African Championships.
Only first place goes through to SAs. Gary’s father, Nelson Lubisi, said he is very proud of his boy. “This is a man,” he said as he looked at his son with a content smile.
Nelson decided to call in professional help and now has Gary training with a professional trainer. When Gary is not with his trainer, his dad makes him run laps in the evenings. “He needs to improve his fitness,” Nelson said.
“Yes, he really does make me run,” Gary joked. Gary has been racing since he went to school. “I love it and I will do it for the rest of my life.”
