Eskom warns against tampering with cables

Residents of the Onderberg region should take note of Eskom's warning regarding damaged, illegally connected or low-hanging power cables.

MALALANE – As a result of sometimes heavy weather or damage by vandals, it presents grave danger to the public and animals alike.

Especially illegally connected cables lack safety features such as protective insulation and are not always suspended at a safe height above ground level, which could have serious consequences if touched. With the current rain in the area, the risk of injury and exposure to damaged power lines and cables become more dangerous.

Do not remove fallen trees or broken branches near a power line before it has been isolated and rendered safe by an Eskom-authorised worker. The public is at greater risk when it rains. Overhead power cables contain high-voltage electricity that can be fatal if touched and the public is warned to refrain from tampering with any Eskom installation.
