The project was initiatied by Fundinjobo’s Interact group under the Rotary Club of White River and was a resounding success thanks to the wonderful support from government organisations, private companies and retired individuals in the Lowveld communities.
For the morning, classrooms were transformed into career zones – tourism, business, medicine, engineering and construction, agriculture, public and social services. Career advisors spent the morning chatting to groups of learners and telling them about a wide range of exciting jobs.
The Agricutural Research Council presented very interesting displays that showed learners the many exciting fields in Agriculture. In the medical zone, Radiography and medical pathology were new careers to some. There was an extensive tourism cohort, well represented by managers from KMI Airport, Dana Travel, the MRTTI hotel school, and Mfafa Safari Tours. The marketing team from Riverside Mall added glamour and gave pupils information about marketing and human resources, while FNB gave advice on careers in the banking industry.
The traffic department attracted much interest and the arrival of the Mbombela Fire truck caused quite a lot of excitement. Other careers such as law, accounting, veterinary science, metalwork, education and even beauty therapy were represented.
The organisers say the happy and festive atmosphere of the day was due to the generosity of the professionals, who gave up the morning to inspire and inform the learners.
Mr Sonnyboy Thwala, headmaster of Fundinjobo, was also very impressed with the event and thanked all the professionals and service providors who attended, as well as the learners and teachers who helped ensure it was successful. “Our children had a very rare chance of interacting with the masters of trade themselves and this was highly motivating to them. I say bravo to everyone who was a part of this important and life changing occasion at our school.”
One of the career advisers also sent the organisers feedback and expressed how impressed he was with the enthusiasm of the pupils. “Definitely a school setting the example to others. I am sure your inputs are making a huge input in the lives of the learners.”
