Nelspruit Hospice to host awareness seminars during National Hospice Week

eminars will be held free of charge for the public on "Tips for caring for the elderly and the infirmed at home"

MBOMBELA – The need for quality palliative care will once again come to the fore during National Hospice Week from May 3 to 10.

Nelspruit Hospice will host the Imperial Toyota Nelspruit/Nelspruit Hospice Glo Festival this week in order to further raise awareness of this special need in the community. There will also be a number of activities to focus more attention on this non-profit organisation’s services.

Palliative care is the active total care of patients and their families by a multi-professional team at a time when the patient is no longer responsive to curative treatment and life expectancy is relatively short.

It responds to physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs and extends, if necessary, to support in bereavement. It maintains quality of life and dignity in death.

Palliative is derived from the Latin word “pallium”, meaning cloak or cover.

Thus symptoms are “cloaked” with treatments and the primary or sole aim is to promote patient comfort.

This week will also highlight the importance of effective partnerships between various stakeholders such as government and clinics and the families and carers at hospice.

Seminars will be held free of charge for the public on “Tips for caring for the elderly and the infirmed at home”. This will be held on two separate days, namely, May 5 from 10:00 to 13:00 at the Methodist Church in Mbombela and May 7 from 05:00 to 08:00 at the same venue.

Space is limited and bookings are essential to be a part of these information sessions. Bookings must be done before May 1 on 013-744-0095.

Awareness days will be held the following dates to make people aware of hospice’s services and to sell washable tattoos to create awareness.

May 5: I’langa Mall from 14:00 to 16:00

May 6: The Grove SUPERSPAR from 14:00 to 16:00

May 7: Crossing SUPERSPAR from 14:00 to 16:00.
