Unclaimed car catches alight at Mediclinic

Occupants of the black Renault Megane with a Mozambican number plate were believed to have been on their way to the hospital for a doctor's appointment when the car's engine apparently caught ablaze just outside its gates.

MBOMBELA – No one likes going to hospital, but for two individuals their trip turned out to be even more detrimental than expected when their vehicle caught fire right in front of Mediclinic Nelspruit on Tuesday.

Occupants of the black Renault Megane with a Mozambican number plate were believed to have been on their way to the hospital for a doctor’s appointment when the car’s engine apparently caught ablaze just outside its gates.

Mbombela Fire and Rescue (MFR) and Van Wettens towing company were called to the scene. Mr Nick Fourie, leading firefighter of MFR said most of the flames had already been doused with a fire extinguisher when they got there. “We just put out the last few flames and left. No one really knows how the car caught fire.”

Ms Robyn Baard, spokesman for Mediclinic Nelspruit, said no patients reported that their vehicle had caught alight before they entered the hospital. “We don’t know whose car it is.”

The owner apparently gave permission to Mr Willem Swart of Van Wettens to tow the vehicle, promising to collect it as soon as possible.

Swart confirmed that the car had had two occupants in it. The vehicle had yet to be collected from Van Wettens’ yard.
