Municipal manager in hot water again

Police confirm that more charges are being investigated.

MBOMBELA – Police have confirmed that its commercial-crimes unit is investigating a second case of fraud against the municipal manager, Mr Noko Seanego.

He was arrested on a fraud charge in January over the appointment of specialised security officers in Mbombela Local Municipality (MLM) while he was still corporate-services manager in October of last year. In February the case was struck off the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court’s roll for further investigation.

In April an investigation, commissioned by executive mayor Cllr Sibusiso Mathonsi, cleared Seanego of misconduct in the appointments. The same report found that there had been weaknesses in the recruitment process and that some employees had attempted to influence it to the benefit of their girlfriends and family members but failed in this attempt.

Brig Selvy Mohlala, provincial police spokesman, this week confirmed that the SAPS were investigating both cases of alleged fraud. The EFF recently opened the second case with police over the appointment of permanent general workers in MLM during April.

The party’s provincial leader, Mr Collen Sedibe, welcomed the investigation but would not comment on the details, saying it might jeopardise the police investigation.

Mr Joseph Ngala, spokesman for the municipality, said it had no comment on the matter at this stage as it was still being investigated.
