Sekhukhune district municipality plans to improve the lives of the youth

“You need to focus on agriculture and mining, do your own projects. The government is trying hard to uplift the young entrepreneurs but you also need to uplift yourselves, Magabe said. This expo is a platform to empower, promote and inspire the youth to play a meaningful role in the development of the district,” he added.

BURGERSFORT – Thaba Moshate Hotel Casino Convention Resort was filled to capacity when the Sekhukhune Youth Chamber of Commerce and Industry (YCCISA) hosted the first youth-opportunities expo in this district. The event was organised at the casino on June 12.

Dignitaries like Mr Rams Mabote of Metro FM, Cllr Ralepane Mamekoa, mayor of Greater Tubatse Municipality, executive mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality Cllr David Magabe, mayor of Fetakgomo Municipality Cllr Kukie Sefala and YCCISA chairman Ms Dipuo Mosana attended.

The youth was guided on how to open a business and fight poverty.

“You need to focus on agriculture and mining, do your own projects. The government is trying hard to uplift the young entrepreneurs but you also need to uplift yourselves, Magabe said. This expo is a platform to empower, promote and inspire the youth to play a meaningful role in the development of the district,” he added.

According to the district’s youth chamber, the vision was to consolidate all youth empowerment and development initiatives championed by civil society, government and the private sector into a high-impact and multifaceted opportunities platform that comprehensively enabled the youth to tackle the triple challenges of unemployment, poverty and inequality.

Deputy minister in the presidency responsible for planning monitoring and evaluation, youth development, Mr Buti Manamela encouraged the youth to utilise government agencies like the National Youth Development Agency (Nyda).

“Burgersfort should have its own Nyda offices, the youth cannot travel long distances to seek assistance. It’s government’s responsibility to drive youth development. The only way to fight this poverty is through education and businesses,” he concluded.

Young entrepreneurs, local mines and government agencies also got an opportunity to exhibit their products at the event. The district municipality will host the Sekhukhune investment day on September 25.

The youth chamber ‘s leadership thanked the Sekhukhune Development Agency, Anglo American, Polokwane chemical suppliers, Rhino minerals, Limpopo economic development agency and other stakeholders for sponsoring their event.
