Still no clear land-use policy in Mbombela

Councillor criticises municipality over ill-considered planning of new settlements.

MBOMBELA – MLM doesn’t have a clear policy on its land use and rights. This was brought up again during an ordinary council meeting on June 30.

Newly appointed DA councillor Ms Kleinste van Rensburg says townships are being designed and approved in terms of residential development only, with no heed paid to integrated human settlements, which call for communal spaces, clinics and educational facilities.

She listed Msholozi, White River Extension 17, Tekwane South Extension 2 and Maggiesdal as cases in point.

“It leaves people living long distances from schools, educational facilities and clinics. We have to consider formulating a clear policy from which a developer would be obliged to make provision for proper educational and health facilities,” she said.

Executive mayor Cllr Sibusiso Mathonsi said MLM was in the process of finalising its strategy. It was still processing proposals on the matter.
